Westfield DPW requests permit for additional work on City View Rd. culvert

WESTFIELD — Alisha Mayer, a civil engineer at Woodard & Curran, requested an amendment on Tuesday from the Conservation Commission to alter one side of the culvert that was installed last year at the City View Road culvert bridge over Jack’s Brook on behalf of the Department of Public Works.

Mayer said they are looking to remove about two and a half feet of the structure on the north end of the culvert at the outflow and replace it. She said the interlocking nested blocks that were located there had moved, which she said may have been caused by settling, and the plan is to recover them and replace them with two feet of rip rap stone. She said the DPW is planning to use on-call contractors for the job, and it won’t take long.

Public Works Deputy Superintendent Casey Berube said after the meeting that the culvert base is still intact, but the blocks on the outside of the culvert failed to stay in place. He said they may have moved during a recent heavy rain, and the flow may have peeled them off if the structure wasn’t completely compacted. The plan is to recover the blocks and, if possible, replace them with rip rap, which he described as large angular blue stone.
